Rio - city of golden beaches
Celebrated its 440th Anniversary in 2005
Rio On March 1, 2005, the city that is Brazil’s main tourist attraction, celebrated the 440th anniversary of its official founding.
Beaches
With six million people or 11 million considering the entire metropolitan region, this metropolis enjoys the Guanabara Bay and miles of beautiful beaches, towering mountains and abundant vegetation, scenes found on untold numbers of poscards.
Its inhabitants are fun and gentle people committed to making the city the most appealing in Brazil and one of the most famous worldwide, despite its serious social inequalities and the fact that it is marred by more than its share of violence.
The region was sought for the first time by Portuguese conquerors on January 1, 1502, and named by famous Florentine cartographer Américo Vespucio. Its name comes from Ria (used to define the entrance of the bay) and de Janeiro (of January).
The cultural life is intense and varied. Perhaps at no time is the city's festive reputation better displayed than during the annual
carnival
that enlivens the city for three solid days with music, singing, parties, balls, and street parades of brilliantly-costumed dancers performing the samba.
