"Sambazon helps Amazonian farmers and makes history as the first Certified Organic Açaí"

Producers of Acaí Win with Organic Certification

A contract of commercialization of açaí will be celebrated today, between organizations of small producers and the company Sambazon of Brazil, with the intermediation from the Federação of Educational and Social Aid (FASE), an NGO with 40 years of action in the Amazon, and with support from the Senator Ana Júlia Carepa (Pará), of the Brazilian National Senate. She said that, beyond the commercialization of the international and national market, this historic contract also guarantees the organic certification of the product, sustainable management, and processing of the pulp; absence of chemical products and the quality of the fruit. But the fundamental difference, said the Senator, is that the work guarantees Fair Trade and is free from Child Labor, a common problem in Amazonia. "This system adds value to the açaí and opens the doors for the international market, since the criteria utilized for the organic certification of the product they follow satisfies the parameters of the big markets", exclaimed the Senator.

Senator Ana Júlia said that the importance of the historic contract is in the form of organization. Second, she said that the process of organic certification of the açaí results in the forest management that benefits the local population from the region of the Baixo-Tocantins, putting the local family producers as the heroes in the commercialization of the fruit. "The family organization here is seen not merely as a supplier of raw material, but seen as the integral part of the organic certification".
