Rio de Janeiro adapts sports facilities for Parapan American Games.Rio de Janeiro, where the 3rd Parapan American Games is taking place, has adapted its stadiums, arenas and sports sceneries to facilitate the participation of handicapped athletes.

"The accessibility here are top grade. The apartments are spacious and we can walk in the streets or take a bus alone without any problem," said Brazil's Parapan Olympic medal winner Clodoaldo Silva.

The Pan American Games' and Parapan American Games' Organizing Committee demanded that all sports sites, such as Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, Multipurpose Arena and Aquatic Park, be accessible to handicapped people.

Therefore all the sports sites include ramps, special elevators, handrails for blind people, braille and voice signs, among other items to facilitate participation by all sorts of handicapped people.

In Villa Panamericana, that lodged nearly 5,660 athletes in July's Rio-2007 Pan American Games, various buildings and common areas include the necessary facilities for handicapped athletes.

This is the first time Parapan American Games are held in the same city and almost simultaneously to the Pan American Games.

Rio de Janeiro's Parapan American Games will gather 1,300 athletes from 25 countries and regions that will compete in ten sports, including athletics, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting.

Handicapped athletes with different impairments, such as visual, movement and even brain palsy, participate in these games.
